Description
A colorful morning on the beach at Sandy Hook New Jersey creates long shadows from a storm fence in front of a sand dune. Sandy Hook is a 1665 square mile peninsula along the eastern cost of New Jersey that was discovered by Henry Hudson in the early 1600s. This peninsula is located at the southern entrance to New York harbor.
After the Civil War Fort Hancock was establish as a military base, armament proving ground and in the 1950s a Nike missile site. Numerous large bunkers that housed weapons to protect New York Harbor are scattered around the peninsula.
Fort Hancock was decommissioned in 1974 when it was turned over to the US National Parks Service and managed as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Today, Fort Hancock, the proving ground, some bunkers, and nike missile site can be toured as historical monuments of US History. The oldest operating lighthouse in the United States (Sandy Hook Lighthouse) can be entered as well as the attached lighthouse keepers residence that includes a Sandy Hook history museum.

Love the shadows of the wooden fence reaching across the sandy shore. The sand ripples like waves which brings to mind the ocean waves that lay beyond the dunes seen here. Very lovely image!

Gorgeous, Gary! So many cool elements...great light, wonderful shadows and textures, interesting sky...and even a bit of ocean. Terrific capture. l/f/pod

I so often enjoy your work, Gary, but this is surely one of my favorites. Love the warm tones, the glimpse of the ocean, the long shadows of the dune fence raking across the sand, and the painted look of the entire scene. I'll be pinning this one, either to my By the Water or my Sunrises and Sunsets board - haven't decided which yet. It's also one of my two pod's in the Best of Minimalism group for March 12.
Gary Slawsky replied:
Thank you very much for your kind words Nikolyn. I'm focusing more on Pinterest now trying to draw buyers to my pixels web site so all pins help.
